Happy New Year Everyone! It’s been roughly about 2 weeks since we counted down to the new year and already my December memories feel so far away from me – where does the time go? :/. Anywho! It’s finally starting to feel like winter here in California, which is why over the next couple of posts I want to share with you some of my favorite winter getaway spots. A place that is sure to elicit all the winter feels is one I can never get enough of, Lake Tahoe! I have so many fond memories that have been made there in both the summer and winter time. One memory that stands out in particular is a trip that Liam and I took about 4 years ago to escape the suburbs of Silicon Valley in order to play in the snow. We just so happened to be visiting during the first week of December and the experience was magical! The holiday season was just ramping-up and snow was falling everywhere around us – it was truly something out of a dream! So, Liam and I packed our bags and headed out of the busy city and straight back to the lake during the first week of December 2017 to rekindle some of those magical memories we made 4 years ago!
Liam and I wanted this trip to be nothing short of amazing, while trying not to break the bank in the process. That’s why we scouted around and found ourselves pleased as punch when we locked in a stay at Base Camp Hotel Tahoe City. You see… Lake Tahoe is known for having some amazing lodging locations, but they can sometimes be on the more expensive side. And While Base Camp Tahoe City completely fits the “amazing lodging” mold, they pale in price, which makes them a winning option for travelers on a budget.
The lodge is set right off North Lake Blvd. and in short walking distance to local shops and some of my favorite eateries and coffee shops. If you’re in the area, check out Jake’s On The Lake for a sunset dinner and some fine dining. If you’re looking for a good lunch spot, head on over to Tahoe Mountain Brewing Co. Brew Pub and check out their insanely delicious beers. Oh, and don’t forget to ask for their special house hot sauce – you wont regret it! 😉
There are a handful of awesome outdoor places to venture to that are incredibly close to the property, including a 1 min walk to the lake! Along with an awesome walking trail located right off the 89 hwy called the Tahoe Rim Trail. They are also located a few miles away from my favorite hiking spot, Eagle Rock Trail (You can learn more about why this is my favorite hiking spot here).
The hotel itself was incredibly family and dog friendly. Continental breakfast in the am every morning was the total win too considering they offered fresh waffles each morning!
The main lobby had a cozy grand fire place with blankets, books and a handful of board games to use! Liam and I may or may not have gotten into a competitive game of Banana Grams one afternoon while sipping on fresh drinks made by staff members in the lobby. Oh, and did I mention they had a happy hour?! SOCRE!! 😉
The rooms were absolutely adorable and made you feel as though you were “glamping”! Every nook and cranny of the place was designed to a “t” and was decorated to fit in perfectly with the whimsical Lake Tahoe atmosphere. I especially loved all of the amazing art that garnished the property by SF artist, Wendy MacNaughton. Her oversized wall hangings of a map of Lake Tahoe fall nothing short of decorative perfection!
Outside there were darling lounge chairs and a fire pit to enjoy during sunset hours! Unfortunately, by the time Liam and I got around to using them they were covered in snow and the air was a bit cold to sit around in. Luckily for us, the property had a communal game room where you can watch the sunset while playing giant Jenga! It’s located right next to a cozy indoor fireplace, and with spring just around the corner from us, we are hoping to finally get that outdoor fire pit experience here next time we visit.
Thank you Base Camp Tahoe City for sponsoring this post!
